When sculpting a piece, my first thought is how to harness and spotlight the intrinsic properties of the material. I look at it from an artistic standpoint before a practical one. Generally letting the art dictate the construction, yet still playing a delicate dance to ensure all pieces are masterful of both design and fabrication.
I developed a technique of stacking the bamboo in a way that lets me manipulate it into unique shapes and patterns. This has become a cornerstone of MISH’s first collection, ECHO. These items are meant to dance with air and sound; allowing the elements to flow effortlessly around and within them. A signature of the collection is the inventive, end grain patterning and chamfer embellishments. Although designed with negative space in mind, ECHO pieces are meant to amplify thoughts and conversation.
